I grew up in an era of scarcity, when life was limited to meeting basic needs, and material comfort was small. My sisters and I entertained ourselves with handmade and inexpensive items (such as designing clothes for my paper dolls), or used simple toys (such as tangram puzzles) to unleash our imaginations. I believe my love for art largely stems from this.
This series of works draws inspiration from my childhood toy - the tangram puzzles. I left home to see the world, fleeing to faraway places, flying far and high, moving faster and farther away.....the farther I am from home, the farther I am from myself. Through making the tangram puzzles, I reconnect with myself, and finally, I arrive home.

Tangram No. 1: Tangram puzzle of Life
Through continuous explorations, stumbles, and piecing together odds and ends, I came to realize the assembling of the Tangram puzzle of Life began in childhood. I thank the nursery rhymes for making me fall in love with rhythm and words; the alphabetic erasers for encouraging me to pursue knowledge; Ludo (the flying chess) for giving me goals; the hopscotch for teaching me to fly; the drawing of paper doll clothes for making me crave for colours and forms; the silkworms for showing me the transformation of life; and the rain lilies for teaching me to accept the winds and rains in life.

Tangram No. 2: Under the same roof
Father’s young wish was to run his small neighbourhood business to support the whole family. We lived upstairs, above the shop – me and my siblings, in our little wooden clogs, came tumbling and bumping on the wooden stair steps – how many teeth were lost, and we grew up twice the speed we came rolling down the stairs. Now, walking down the street where the old shop used to stand, I could no longer recognize where things once were. The children have scattered, each embarked on their own path. During festive gatherings, I always recall: mom’s young wish was to build a seven storey tong lau, one for each of her seven child, so we could all live together under the same roof.

Tangram No.3: On the road
I loved to climb up a big tree when I was in fifth grade boarding at Ping Shan. That tree was my hiding place then, my comforting home in times of loneliness. Decades have passed; the school has now become a housing estate, and the road leading to that place is now hidden in the wrinkles of my memories. Life never promised you peaceful sceneries; there are always patches and folds, the irreversible cuts. Just remember the smoothness and gentleness that once existed, and let nature take its course. On the road, there may be spiritual practice, transformation, or neither; and if I encounter a tree that brings me peace, allow me to greet it - gently.

Tangram No.4: I’m home
Each time I embrace the changing nature of all things, I’m doing my homework on the path of growth. Let me return to the peaceful home of my heart and reunite with my original self.
