LOK, Yin Ping Yummie

Certified FOAT® Practitioner.

In the five years since I practiced FOAT as a self-healing tool, I have experienced and realized the body message as a source of wisdom.   The gentle allowing of the “felt sense” to unfold cultivates great compassion for self and others; I returned to my inner lakes and mountains.  Through FOAT practices, I am learning to become a more congruent and holistic person.  The artwork I produced through FOAT may not be aesthetically pleasing; however, it is a call coming from within.

  1. Theme: Self-Care                                                                          While checking in with my need for self-care, I felt a pair of hands grasping on my neck and simultaneously pressing on my stomach.  I opened my eyes, and drew out such scene.  Looking at the image, I realized the pair of hands grasping on my neck and simultaneously pressing on my stomach was the “handle”.  I tried to figure out whom these hands belonged to, but was taken aback to find that these hands were actually mine. I suddenly realized that I have been using so much effort in speaking and acting cautiously in my role as a helping professional; I was unconsciously blocking the passage of my own emotions and feelings.  Worst of all, I have been blocking my own energy.  This “felt shift” came as a wake-up call for me.  What an amazing message from my inner wisdom.  I then posed the question: “What’s needed to bring self-care into my life?”  I immediately found my hands let go, and a vast volume of energy was released.

“When imagery stems from such a felt sense, and when the impact   of  an image is used to engender a felt shift, that is when working      with imagery is most powerful.” (Gendlin, 1980)

2. Theme: Working on an issue

In this round of peer practice, my felt sense was a sense of tightness   on chest, it happened quite often so I acknowledged “it”. It turned into a little girl, who was surprised that I noticed her. I had an inner dialogue with her. I asked what she needed, and received that shewanted space. I acknowledged her needs. Then, she stretched out her little hand, indicating a kind gesture. Later, I drew the scene out.

When I took a careful look at the drawing, it seemed to me that the little girl was carrying another smaller child on her back.  A little child     carrying a burden that outweighed her age was the  “handle” of my    frequent tension on chest. I asked: “What would it be like when all    resolved?” The little child took my hand, together we walked out of the shadow..

FOAT guides need to do solo practice, to face our  own distress and weaknesses, to sit and dialogue with it.  If we cannot tolerate our own confusion and ambiguity emerged in the process of self-discovery, We would not be able to face and accept the difficult emotions of our    clients.

3. Theme: Source of Strength

When I was connecting with my “Source of Strength” in my inner space, the image of the waterfront where I go jogging emerged, with the music "Blue Danube" sounding in the background.  The image of a dried leaf I picked up earlier appeared right in front of my eyes, and the word “resilience” came to my mind; it came from a big tree that stood tall despite the strong winds and rain. Though many leaves had fallen in  Winter, new leaves would appear in spring. I used the leaf to make a collage, and asked myself when finished: “Is there anything I’d like to add to the piece?” Gold was the answer.

The guides in training is required to have their own experience of creative expression using different art materials and in various art forms. Through fully absorbing ourselves with the art materials, process and artwork, and using the art process to sit with and manage our emotions, we have a better understanding of the clients’  challenges during their process of self-discovery.

4.Theme: Checking in with my emotions

Overwhelmed by the sudden death of my nephew, I checked in with my emotions. By adopting FOAT’s friendly attitude, I was fully present with my inner felt sense. The image of my swollen, red eyes, and the internal intense sadness emerged. I kept company with my intense sadness and acknowledged it: “You are not alone, I am here with you.” Then, a message came to my head: “Yesterday’s tears have become RAIN…that nourishes all living things on earth.” Afterwards, I realized it must have come from the famous quote of Thich Nhat Hanh: “The tears I shed yesterday have become rain”. I was glad that Thay came forward, and thus I felt relieved.

The compassionate allowing of those vague and even disturbing emotions to unfold, and “sitting with it” in a friendly, accepting way, is very similar to the mindfulness attitudes of “seeing what is and letting it be”.
