Your car is parked at the lay-by ahead

Your car is parked at the lay-by ahead,

Waiting to lead us

To the town you know so well.

There are always unexpected forks in the road or detours

That steer the car in different directions.

At the bustling roundabout,

Other cars inevitably cut in,

Separating our cars,

Or due to inconsistent speeds,

We lose sight of each other.

When we connect through the phone,

The road conditions you describe

Don’t match what’s in front of us.

Is your speed too fast,

Or did we miss some exit?

Over twenty years ago,

A timid sixth-form student,

Struggling with awkward English,

Tried to buy a fast food meal.

We sat in a corner a little further away,

Watching you order in an unfamiliar language,

Then smiling as you brought over the burgers and fries.

When we dropped you off at the university dorm,

Your books, belongings, and clothes

Filled the car.

And your laptop and printer held in my arms

Then, looking in the rearview mirror

you blended into the freshers’ crowd.

Now,

Strollers and children’s clothes

Fill the car.

Your child sleeps in the car seat,

Your wife tending beside him.

Our car follows behind,

Trying to maintain the right speed and distance.

If we lose each other again,

Let’s meet at the next lay-by,

Even if our routes differ.

We’ll always find our way,

So long as in our hearts we know

You’re at the steering wheel,

Your child asleep in the car seat,

Your wife cares beside.

We rest assured and look forward to the next time we reunite

We rest assured and look forward to the next time we reunite

If one day my legs wither...

If one day my legs wither...

Please continue your journey...

Go! To lands you have never set foot on...

Go! To shores you have never freely roamed...

Please promise me this

when that time comes        that by your side

there will sit another     someone who accompanies you to see the scenery

Your hand      Pointing toward the verdant green ahead

Your other hand     Holding hers -

Just as you are now      holding      mine

The tea has gone cold.

Not a speck of dust is stirred.

You choose to

quietly

leave your seat.

On the coffee table

Half a pot of cold tea remains;

At the bottom of the cup a few tea leaves lie,

still giving off fragrance.

You came purely to enjoy the tea;

Once the tea is finished, there's no reason to stay.

The tea sloshes in your stomach,

still carrying warmth.

The chair cushion still holds warmth

Not a speck of dust is stirred.

You choose to

quietly

leave your seat.

With my fingertip

on the cold coffee table

I lightly tap.

Ming Pao. Century

Hide

A huge squirrel
plucks an acorn
and tosses it onto the grass, then
along the wooden fence
it climbs
down—
like a small marble
it bounces
into the grass.
With its mouth
it cracks open the shell,
draws out the acorn inside.
Both paws busy digging a hole,
it buries the fruit in the turf,
then it pulls up nearby grass
to quickly fill the hole.
From a distance
the lawn still appears green and even.

On the edge of the wooden fence
a gray pigeon
stands.
On the other side of the fence
a dog
squats.
Against the fence, by the house—
at the window—someone stands.
Above the roof
a few eagles                                                                                                    wheel and soar.
In the blue sky
a few white clouds
drift by.
